MAST Center
Financial Operations
The
MAST Center is a sponsor financed and sponsor-directed organization.
We are a Multi-University Research Center as defined by the National
Science Foundation, with center sites at the University of Colorado
and other affiliated Universities. The guiding principles of our
financial stewardship are:
- Sponsor
fees go directly to support research. We are proud of the
cost-effective manner in which the Center is operated. Efficient
Center administration enables us to maximize the use of sponsor
fees for support of the Center research program.
- Compared
to corporate or institutional research, our cooperative research
costs far less. Because we are an NSF I/U CRC, our annual
sponsor fee of $50,000 is assessed a special, very low 6% overhead
rate that enables us to fund each research project at $40,000
per year. At the usual, full university overhead rate of 50%,
approximately $60,000 per year of funding would be required to
generate $40,000 per year of project support.
- Sponsors
share in the results of multiple projects.
- The
Center has a history of dedicated financial stewardship and balanced
budgets since inception. This assures sponsors of project
funding to completion and the ultimate financial health of the
Center.
